Browser
A web browser in the old style. It opens the sites that allow it, and shows the rest as the Internet Archive kept them, back to 1996.
What it does
- Opens any site that lets itself be shown inside another page: Wikipedia, Project Gutenberg and a great many smaller sites.
- Most large sites refuse to be shown this way. For those it offers the Internet Archive's copy, or opens the site in a new tab.
- Has a time machine: choose a year from 1996 to 2012 and see how a site looked then.
- Searches Wikipedia, Marginalia or Wiby from the Location box. (Google, Bing and DuckDuckGo are among the sites that refuse.)
- Keeps your bookmarks in your own browser.
Your data
Unlike the rest of chandraOS, the Browser shows pages from other websites. Those sites, and the Internet Archive, can see your visit, as they would in any browser. Nothing passes through this site, and it asks before it connects.
Good to know
The Location box cannot follow links you click inside a page. Browsers do not let one site watch what happens in another, and that is a good thing.
